Asterion Noctis

the last Spartan

  • 36 years old, his age on the night he took the Veil
  • Spartan of Laconia, Velorum of the Twilight
  • Founder of the Ash Legion
  • Silver sword, black bronze shield

I. The last Spartan

Asterion was born when Sparta was already a memory.

The elders still spoke of Leonidas. Of Thermopylae. Of three hundred men who chose to die rather than take one step back.

Children were taught that they carried that blood.

Asterion believed every word.

He trained until he bled. He bled until he felt nothing. He learned to sleep on the ground, to silence hunger, to hold his shield with a broken arm. Because a Spartan comes back with his shield or on it.

And one day he looked around and understood the truth.

Sparta had died long before its warriors.

Rome decided their wars. Rome judged their disputes. Rome let them keep their customs, the way you let an old dog keep its blanket.

And the men who spoke of honour bowed their heads before those they claimed to despise.

Asterion began to ask.

First his teachers.

Then the priests.

In the end, the gods.

No one answered.

II. The shield on the altar

In the year 146 before our era, Rome razed Corinth and Greece ceased to be free.

Asterion watched men come home who still called themselves Spartans. They had fought, obeyed and died for causes that were no longer theirs.

That night he walked into the temple, laid his shield before the altar and walked out without looking back.

He was eighteen.

He did not desert Sparta.

He deserted what Sparta had become.

III. Towards the setting sun

Six years on the road west.

He was a mercenary for kings he forgot, for cities he did not care about, for men he never respected. He sold his sword in Italy, on the islands, on the shores of the sea in the middle.

He won battles that were not his and slept with his sword under his arm.

Until he reached the valley of the Iber.

And there he found Salduie.

IV. Salduie

It did not have the marble of Corinth.

It did not have the walls of Rome.

It did not have the legends of Sparta.

But it was alive.

Loaded boats on the river. Children running between mud-brick houses. Smiths, shepherds and warriors sharing the same street and the same wine. No one needed to recite the name of a dead hero to know who they were.

For the first time in his life, Asterion found a people who did not live off their past.

They lived in their present.

He stayed.

He learned their tongue. He ate their bread. He trained their young on the riverbank, teaching them to lock shields the way it was done in Laconia.

And he loved. He loved as he had never been allowed to love in Sparta, where even love was a duty.

For twelve years, Asterion was happy.

He, who had been born to die in glory, discovered that the hard thing was to live with joy.

V. The legions

In 133, Numantia fell after years of siege. Its defenders chose fire over chains.

Rome did not stop there.

The columns marched down the Ebro valley to collect their debts, the real ones and the invented ones. Town by town. Well by well.

And one night in the year 128, the legions reached Salduie.

Asterion knew that way of marching. He had seen it in Greece. He knew what came behind the standards.

For the first time in eighteen years, he stood in front of a wall again.

VI. The night of the ashes

Spartans have a vow.

You do not break the shield. You do not leave the formation. You do not fight with hatred, you fight with discipline. Death is dealt clean, face to face, and the fallen are respected.

That night, Asterion broke the whole vow.

His people were burning. The house where he had loved was burning. The children he had taught to lock shields were burning.

And something, in the middle of the smoke, spoke to him.

No one knows what it was. No one knows who.

Asterion only knew that discipline was no longer enough.

He broke formation. He hunted down those who fled. He left no one standing who had touched a torch. He did things no god of Sparta would ever have forgiven.

When the sun rose, Salduie was ash. And so were the legionaries who burned it.

VII. The Veil

Asterion had spent half his life looking for answers in the gods.

The Veil offered him none.

It offered him something far more dangerous:

choice.

The Light demands faith.

The Darkness demands obedience.

The Twilight demands neither. It only asks you to accept that every man carries his own shadow, and to decide what to do with it.

Asterion accepted.

He took the Veil that same morning, on his knees among the rubble.

And so Asterion Velorum was born.

And since that day, he has not aged. He is thirty-six. He always will be.

VIII. The Ash Legion

Few were left.

Mercenaries. Sedetani. Exiles. Men and women with no home to return to.

Asterion walked among the ruins and knelt. He took a handful of still-warm ash and spread it across his face.

And he said:

"A city exists as long as someone remembers its name."

One by one, the others did the same.

Asterion picked up an old bronze shield from the ground, blackened by the fire. With that ash he drew on it the symbol of his new brotherhood.

And so the Ash Legion was born.

They did not swear to defend kings.

They did not swear to defend empires.

They did not even swear to defend cities.

They swore to defend what empires try to erase.

Since then, every new member of the Legion receives a mark on the face made with the ashes kept from that night.

They are called the Ashes of Salduie.

And those who wear them, the people call the ashen.

IX. The second death

But Rome does not need to burn a city to erase it.

Salduie rose from its ashes. And Rome came back, this time without torches.

First the merchants.

Then the treaties.

Then the laws.

In the year 89, the finest riders of Salduie rode for Rome in Italy, and Rome paid them with its citizenship. Asterion watched them ride off, proud. He was seventy-five by then, with the same face as on the night of the fire.

And in the year 14, on the land of Salduie, a new colony began to rise.

New streets. New standards. Veterans of three legions.

And a new name:

Caesaraugusta.

Asterion watched children learn to say Caesaraugusta without ever having heard the word Salduie.

Then he understood everything.

Sparta died without disappearing.

Salduie disappeared without dying.

Asterion had seen both ways to kill a people. And he had survived them both.

X. What he carries

That is why Asterion does not pray.

He once gave his whole life to a creed, and the creed left him alone before an empty altar. He has not traded the gods of Sparta for the Veil. If he follows the Twilight, it is precisely because the Twilight does not ask him to stop doubting.

That is why he has never again abandoned a city.

And that is why, centuries later, he still walks Bloodveil with his face marked grey.

Under his helmet, in the cracks of his shield, on the edge of his silver sword, he carries something no empire has ever been able to take from him.

The ashes of the city that stood before Zaragoza.
