He had a name once.
No one remembers it. Not even him.
He was a man, long ago. A mountain hunter who went too deep into a cave looking for his brother.
What he found inside was not his brother.
It was something old. Older than castles, older than fear. Something that slept hanging from the rock and had not tasted warm blood in centuries.
It did not turn him out of mercy. It turned him because it needed a guard dog. Something that would not think. Something that could not betray it.
The thirst did the rest.
He drank so much and so fast that the blood ate him from the inside. Wings grew where he had arms. Claws where he had hands. His voice broke into a screech that shatters stained glass.
And he forgot how to be a man again.
The other vampires despise him in public. They say that is what happens to the weak who do not know when to stop.
But when war comes, everyone wants Strigoth in front.
Because he does not flee. He does not bargain. He does not tire.
And because when he bites one of his own to heal himself, the one bitten almost always survives.
Almost.

I asked Strigoth what his name used to be. He did not answer. He screeched. Every window in the hall shattered. I think that means he does not remember.
