In the Silent Order, someone had to speak. Even if it was rarely. Even if it was quietly.
That someone was Orenne.
She came to the monastery as a child, a bundle over her shoulder and a habit of covering her ears whenever a crowd gathered.
Back in her village they called her strange. She would stop dead in the middle of the square, head tilted, listening to things no one else could hear.
The monks didn't ask. They gave her a cell at the far end, where not even the wind reaches, and that was that.
Her hearing was frightening. She could hear a novice breathing two cells away. She could hear a rat in the granary. She could hear a lie from three steps off.
And her voice could barely be heard at all. The masters saw right away what it was good for.
In the Order, commands are not shouted. They are whispered. One word in the right ear, at the right moment, to whoever needs it. Orenne learned to say "now" so that only the one meant to hear it does.
That is why they call her the Low Voice.
She was also the one who taught the Order how to walk. It sounds like nothing. It isn't.
Heel, edge, toe. Not a creaking board. Not a shifted stone.
Novices spent their first year stumbling through the halls. By the second, no one could hear them anymore. Not even her. It gave her a pride she has never confessed.
No one in the Order wields a sword. Neither does Orenne. She carries two short daggers, one in each hand, and they make exactly as much noise as she does.
None.
Against a well-guarded foe, she settles for one. Against one whose shield is gone, there's no time to decide which of the two it was.
But she doesn't fight to show off. She fights for the others.
She goes to whoever is bleeding, closes the wound with two fingers and whispers something in their ear. No one knows what. They get up and strike as if they had been waiting an hour for that permission.
And all the while, she counts. Every good blow her people land, one by one. Under her breath, of course.
With each one, something lights up in her eyes that doesn't suit a seventy-six-year-old nun at all.
That night, she wasn't at the monastery. She had gone out for herbs. She came back at dawn with the basket still in her hand and saw the same thing Ammeth saw.
She hasn't gone out for herbs alone since.
Vaelund doesn't speak of what happened. Orenne doesn't ask. She sits near him, sharpens her daggers, and waits.
She knows how to wait. She has done it all her life, quietly.
She has never shouted. Not once.
She has never needed to. When Orenne speaks, the whole battlefield lowers its voice to listen.
