Oriel arrived at the Sanctuary of Mourning at eleven years old, barefoot and with a fever that would not let her remember even her own family name.
The sisters laid her down in the infirmary and gave her three days. On the fourth she got up, picked up a bucket and started scrubbing the floor.
Nobody asked her to stay. Nobody asked her to leave either.
Fifty-seven years later she is still there. She has seen four high priestesses come and go, three wars, and more winters than she cares to count.
She is the oldest in the Sanctuary and the shortest. When she crosses the halls with her birch staff, the deer step aside to let her pass. So do the novices.
She does not work miracles. She says so herself. What she does is simpler: she plants herself among the wounded, closes her eyes and lends them her own life. A little to each one. Just enough for them to last until tomorrow.
That is why the sisters say Oriel heals with what she has. And that she has a lot.
In battle she never raises her voice. She stays at the back, her staff planted in the ground, and meditates. She looks asleep. She is not. She is counting.
She counts every blow her people land. And when one strikes where it truly hurts, Oriel opens her eyes and the enemy is left speechless. Literally.
The novices ask her how she does it. She always gives the same answer:
"Elyra does not shout, child. Elyra waits."
They say she was there the night Lyra fell. That she was the last to let go of her hand.
If it is true, she has never told anyone.
But since that night, Sister Oriel does not go to bed until the last one in the Sanctuary has fallen asleep.
