In the Court of Dusk nobody notices Ysolde Marren. And that is her greatest talent.
She looks nineteen. She is twenty-four. She smiles when spoken to, lowers her eyes when scolded and apologises with a sweetness that disarms anyone. Those who have seen her up close in a dark corridor can no longer tell the tale.
Because the moment you trust her, the two daggers appear. And she cuts your throat.
She is Count Malvorn's acolyte. He took her out of nowhere, dressed her in velvet and taught her that at Court you kill with two things: the smile and the steel, in that order. They say she is his answer to his wife's assassin. He has never denied it.
Ysolde fears nothing in the Dusk. Except one thing.
Nyxaria Thal.
She saw her work only once. Since then she sleeps with her back to the wall and a dagger under her pillow, and when they cross paths in a hall, it is the only time her smile takes a moment to appear.
At Court no one weeps for the fallen. Neither does Ysolde. But each one who falls makes her a little sharper.
Skills
Her basic attack, a little more damaging with every level. At its peak, one hit in two leaves the enemy under a Seal: a whole turn unable to use their Feats.
A slash with 60% extra damage. And the more Curses she carries, the more it hurts. Wounded, she is still dangerous. More so, in fact.
Hits harder with every level. At its maximum, if Count Malvorn is standing at her side, he strikes too.
Every Court of Dusk ally who falls leaves her a little more Attack for the rest of the battle. In the Dusk, even the dead are useful.
I asked her why she kept smiling after a kill. She told me she was not smiling. That it was the face the Count had left her with.
