Ser Roderic Halstead has never been the best swordsman in the Order of the Dawn. Nor the strongest. Nor the fastest.
He is the one who watches.
As a boy he was a stable hand in Halstead, a lordship of stone and mud so small that the place gave him his surname. He cleaned the boots of the knights who stopped to water their horses. And he watched them train in the yard without blinking.
One day, an old knight threw him a wooden sword. "If you watch so much, show me what you have seen."
Roderic repeated for him, blow by blow, the last fight in that yard. With the same mistakes.
The knight took him to the Order that very afternoon.
There he learned what nobody teaches. That a battle is not won by whoever hits hardest, but by whoever knows when to hit. That the best blow is the one that lands right after a brother's. That a shield is not only for stopping.
It is for pushing.
He never asked to lead. When they offered him a captaincy, he said no. "You cannot see anything from the front."
He chose to stay at their side. When a brother lands a clean blow, Roderic is already moving. When an enemy bleeds, he already knows where to strike.
He has buried more brothers than he wants to count. He has a habit nobody in the Order argues with anymore: when two youngsters promise too much, he sticks to them like a shadow.
He did it with Aldric and Serathor, when they asked to be posted to Grey Crag and nobody else wanted to go with them. "Someone has to keep an eye on these two."
He still does.
To the recruits he always says the same thing, while he straps the shield to their arm:
"You never fight alone. Never. Look at the one beside you. If they advance, you advance. If they fall, you take their place."
And then, more quietly:
"And if nobody stands in front, you do. But with your guard up."

I asked Roderic why he never accepted a captaincy. He said you cannot see anything from the front. Then he stood beside me, without another word.
