Sela Vantrasca was left at the gate of the Order of the White Heron at four years old, with a sack of clothes and a wooden sword. Nobody ever came asking for her.
They raised swords for the kingdom there. Obey. Keep quiet. Die standing if you have to.
Sela learned to obey. She learned to die standing. Keeping quiet, she never learned.
At nineteen she was the best blade of her year. Quick, short and with the bad habit of asking why.
At twenty a captain of the Order was found dead. In his cell, the door locked from the inside and Sela's dagger in his back.
Nobody asked her if she had done it. Nobody asked who it suited.
They tried her in a single morning. Her master, the man who had taught her to hold a sword, said nothing. Not for her. Not against her. Nothing.
Weeks later they caught the real killer. The Order called her back, as if the whole thing had been a paperwork mix-up.
Sela showed up. She set the heron brooch on the table. And she walked out.
Inside, they taught her how to fight. Outside, she learned who for.
She spent two years without a name, road after road, until one morning she found an ash feather nailed to the door of the inn where she slept. Mara had left it.
Mara didn't ask her to join the Flock. She asked for something harder: that nobody ever know she had.
That was the day Swift was born.
The swift is the bird that never lands. It eats on the wing. It sleeps on the wing. And if one day it touches the ground, it no longer knows how to rise.
Sela never lands either. Every village knows her by a different name, a different cloak and a different story.
She carries messages she never writes down. She pulls people out of dungeons who officially don't exist. She knows which lord sells out whom, for how much and in which tavern he collects.
When someone in the Flock needs an open door, a clear road or a horse waiting, a grey feather turns up in exactly the right place. Nobody has ever seen her leave it.
In battle she stops hiding. There's no point there. She strikes fast and comes out of every blow better covered. She pushes her own to move quicker, and whatever they gain, she gains too.
The more they cover her, the harder she falls on the enemy. And when she truly lands a hit, the whole Flock feels it.
She is twenty-eight and stands one metre sixty-six. One sword, four false names and not a single bed she has slept in two nights running.
The Order of the White Heron is still looking for her. They say it's to apologise. Sela is in no hurry to be found.
Swifts don't come down. Neither does she.
