In the Sanctuary of Mourning they call him the Novice. It is not a title. It is a kind way of saying he still knows almost nothing.
He knows it. That is why he gets up before anyone else, sweeps the yard, carries the water and listens to the sisters the way you listen to the rain.
He arrived with an inherited sword too big for him and a shield with a dent in the middle. He has never said whose they were.
He cannot heal. He cannot say the long prayers. He cannot read the light the way the sisters do.
He can stand in front.
When a fight begins, he is the first to step forward. He bangs his sword on his shield and shouts, so every eye turns to him. And not to the others.
He charges the way only someone who has not yet learned to hesitate can. Sometimes the enemy is left without the strength for the next blow.
When one of his own falters, he stands beside them and raises his shield for both.
The sisters have told him a thousand times that a shield is not a promise.
Doran disagrees.
They have seen him on his knees, bleeding, his breath in pieces. They have seen him get back up.
Nobody knows where he finds the strength. He says it is not strength.
It is that nobody has given him permission to fall yet.
